The Joy of the Lord

“The joy of the Lord is your strength.” — Nehemiah 8:10 But what does this truly mean? And why is it that the Christian life is so rarely associated with joy today? In this retreat, we will explore these questions and others concerning the experience of joy in the life of discipleship. Together, we will reflect on how the joy of the Lord can become a real and sustaining strength in our personal lives and how we may find true rest in Him.

The late Dr Martin Lloyd-Jones delivered a series of sermons on 1 Peter 1:8, in which he examined the reality of a profound, supernatural joy bestowed by God. In these messages, he particularly reflected on the biblical teaching about the Holy Spirit and the promise John the Baptist made—that Jesus would baptise His followers with the Holy Spirit.

We are living in difficult and uncertain times, when the true joy of the Lord often seems distant or seldom experienced. For this reason, we believe it is important to create a space where people can come together to learn, seek, and rediscover the assurance of the Lord, who is our joy. Joy is not reserved for a few. Scripture teaches that all believers are invited to experience this deeper work of the Spirit.

Rev. John Dickinson, who faithfully led Carnmoney Presbyterian Church for many years, has not only taught about the work of the Spirit but has also personally experienced the sustaining joy of the Lord through times of difficulty. We are delighted that he will be our first speaker, launching a new season of short spiritual retreats for those who are seeking the Lord and hungry for His presence. Come, see, and experience.
